How to Identify Signs or Symptoms of West Nile Virus
West Nile virus is a serious illness that can be life-threatening and is most often spread by mosquitoes. Below are some steps you can take to identify whether you have West Nile virus.
Determine whether you have severe illness, which includes high fever, stiffness of the neck, disorientation, convulsions, coma, muscle weakness, vision loss, or numbness. Note that only about 1 in 150 persons experience these symptoms.
Around 20 out of 100 persons experience these symptoms: headache, body aches, fever, nausea, vomiting, skin rash on the chest or back, or swollen lymph glands. Determine whether you have any of these symptoms.
80 out of 100 people show no symptoms at all. People infected with West Nile virus usually develop symptoms within two weeks.
Milder cases of West Nile virus will often improve on their own and pass through a person’s system. However, if you suspect you have West Nile virus, or are suffering from the any of the symptoms listed above, you should contact your doctor.
