How to Restart IIS

Internet Information Services (IIS) is a web server provided by Microsoft that ships with most versions of its Microsoft Windows operating system. When doing web development or managing operations for a website, it is sometimes necessary to restart Internet Information Services for a website to function properly. This article lists the simple steps to restart Internet Information Services.

1. Open up a command prompt by selecting “Start” and running “Command Prompt” or “cmd”. If you are not logged in with an account with administrator access and are running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista, you can right-click and select “Run as administrator” to run the command-prompt as an administrator.

2. At the command prompt, type: “iisreset” without the quotes.

3. This will attempt to restart Internet Information Services. Once Internet Information Services has restarted, the command prompt will return.

4. At the command prompt, type “exit” to exit the command prompt. You have successfully restarted Internet Information Services.
