How to Skip Rocks or Stones
Skipping rocks is something that people of all ages can do time and time again when at the lake, pond or beach. This guide teaches you how to maximize the number of skips.
Pick a flat, disc-shaped rock that is not too light or too heavy. It should weigh more than a coin, but you don’t want it to weigh as much as an orange.
Place your index finger of your throwing hand around the back half of the rock so that it curls around the rock.
Brace the rock by resting it on your middle finger underneath the rock.
Secure the rock by having your thumb resting lightly on the middle of the disc-shaped rock.
Bend your knees and prepare to throw the rock in a side-armed motion.
When throwing the rock in a side-armed motion, you should let the rock roll off your index finger, and the disc should rotate like a Frisbee spinning at the water.
Practice your angles hitting the water. If you hit it just right, you may be able to get 5, 6 or even more skips. If your angle is too steep, you may get no bounce, or only one or two big bounces. An angle between 20 to 30 degrees should provide the most skips.
