How to Write a Demand Letter
If you need to resolve a dispute or are in a potential legal situation, a demand letter can help you get you what you want or resolve the situation. Follow the steps below to write an effective demand letter.
In the beginning, write that you are making the communication in an effort to fully resolve the matter.
Then, briefly write the facts of the situation (and your connection) as you view them in a logical and/or chronological fashion.
If you believe the other party has done something wrong, or if you are asking that party to take some type of action (i.e., refund your money), state that next in the demand letter.
Provide a time-frame for the other party to take corrective action, or to do what you are requesting (e.g., one week). Also, state that if the party does not comply within that time-frame, you are prepared to exercise all available legal rights and remedies you have against that party (assuming you are prepared to do that).
If you have any questions or concerns relating to your dispute or potential legal situation, you should contact an attorney.
